Leventina (Leventina District)
Situated to the north of the canton, its territory covers the area of the Ticino River as far south as Biasca, in particular the Bedretto Valley and the Leventina Valley.
Leventina is divided into four sub-districts, termed 'circles' (circoli), and a total area of 479.57 km2 with a population of (as of ). Its capital is the municipality (comune) of Faido. The valley became part of Switzerland on 5 March 1480, following the treaty of Lucerne with the Duchy of Milan.
The Leventina District has an area,, of 479.57 km2. Of this area, 20.05 km2 or 4.2% is used for agricultural purposes, while 175.08 km2 or 36.5% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 13.59 km2 or 2.8% is settled (buildings or roads), 9.26 km2 or 1.9% is either rivers or lakes and 175.23 km2 or 36.5% is unproductive land.
Of the built up area, housing and buildings made up 0.9% and transportation infrastructure made up 1.4%. Out of the forested land, 28.2% of the total land area is heavily forested and 2.3% is covered with orchards or small clusters of trees. Of the agricultural land, 3.2% is used for growing crops. Of the water in the district, 1.0% is in lakes and 1.0% is in rivers and streams. Of the unproductive areas, 16.5% is unproductive vegetation and 20.0% is too rocky for vegetation.
